Objective:
Inspired by William McDonough and Michael Braungart’s book Cradle to Cradle, this assignment encourages students to explore ways to eliminate waste. Students work in teams of two to build/construct new products utilizing products formally deemed as “waste”.
Products:
The found products classified as “waste” were acquired from a trip to Recycle Ann Arbor.
Operable Wooden Shutters
Shutters were fastened together and combined with frosted acrylic to create a lamp. The operable controls of the shutters is utilized as a dimming feature of the lamp.
Wooden Ceiling Fan Blades
Blades were glued together and fastened to a bulletin board to create a wall-mounted magazine rack.
Acrylic Quotation Marks from a Large Sign
Signage pieces were situated flat in a round shape and in welded with rebar scraps from the metal shop to create a coffee table base. The top of each signage piece can be removed to install lighting within.
